See that? That's the norm here in PEI. All waste is separated into waste, compost, and recyclables. Even in fast food establishments. This is all part of the Waste Watch Program, the only one in Canada, as far as I know. It's run by the Government of PEI. Here is just a small excerpt explaining the purpose of the program:
The Waste Watch program enables us to effectively reduce the amount of waste being buried in landfills. By sorting the waste we generate in our residences and businesses, we are helping to preserve our farmland and drinking water. We are contributing to the solution of waste management and environmental protection. It's a little bit confusing right now, but I think I'll get used to it fairly quickly.
I thought this would be a good discussion topic - good idea, bad idea, comparison to where you're living now? Feel free to comment and perhaps we can get a discussion going!

GOOD IDEA!!! SASKATCHEWAN STUPID...NOT HAVE!!!
I like it, I think we need one of those huts in our kitchen and bathroom, you know, for waste.
Although it was cheaper for laundry here in rez, it sounds like yours is tons better. And no worries, I did my laundry at the same time you are mentioning as well- so much easier that way! (Does that mean we are both pathetic?)
I LOVE the waste watch program! It looks like it makes it so much easier to do the recycling thing. Now if only the rest of the country would catch on! No more wandering around looking for a recycling bin...
We compost and recycle, but unfortunately, there is still waste. I think more people would jump on board if it was this simple - not that it's hard to do on your own, but well, sometimes we need to be shown how.
Yeah, so far, it's seemed like it's really working. The fact that they obviously had at least SOME buy-in from the restaurant industry is, in my opinion, amazing. I've always considered Fast Food to be an industry of waste. Although, I guess at the same time, when I've mentioned it to bosses, the answer has been "We would recycle if we didn't have to pay extra to have it shipped away." So, I guess by putting in government measures that pay for that, it makes it easier on the restaurants. I dunno.
And I think for tourists, it's a bit of a novelty, so they probably follow it pretty stringently. Hard to say - I'm definitely coming here at the end of the tourist season.
